Welcome to the second day of the 50th National Small Business Week! Just in case you miss the first day action, check out this live recording of the event.

Celebrating the Small Business Week, June 17-21, 2013, The UPS Store released their small business survey results. The survey was on nearly 1,500 consumers and more than 200 small business owners throughout the US, conducted between May 3 and 7, 2013.

As always, there are some interesting findings from the survey. Here are some of the highlights:

Many dream the American dream…

Almost half of American dream of starting their own business, while 71 percent of small business owners say they would start their business all over again today.

…but not many dare to take the leap of faith

Staring a small business was never an easy decision. Dreaming about starting up your own business is one thing, but turning that dream into reality is indeed a new challenge.

That known fact is reflected loud and clear in the survey results…

51 percent of respondents spent more than two years thinking and dreaming about their future business before eventually taking the leap of faith. 31 percent of respondents even spent more than five years in their planning stage before they finally launch a business.

Why the long wait?

Well, it’s only logical. When starting out, many small business owners don’t have any experience whatsoever in becoming their own boss. Many have the experience via working for a boss, but going it all alone is a whole different league. Your expertise it not the priority, but your vision and courage to pursue that vision are the detrimental factors.

“Many small business owners told us they wish they had a partner to rely on for advice when making the leap to start their own company,” said Michelle Van Slyke, vice president of marketing and small business solutions at The UPS Store.

Indeed, we can’t deny the fact that we need partners to discuss with and mentors to learn form – and often lean to when doubts and uncertainties hit us.
